Ilanz. The first city along the Rhine.

More than 700 years ago, Ilanz was first mentioned as a settlement with city rights.

To be "the first city along the Rhine" is a great honour - because the Rhine is not just any river, but one of the longest in Europe and of great importance for Switzerland and other countries.

The old town, partly still surrounded by high city walls, is affectionately called "Städtli" by the locals. The two city gates Obertor and Schwarzes Tor lead to the old part of the town. Here, one will find historical buildings from the 16th and 17th century. St. Margarethenkirche is a gem with extraordinary depictions of death and life from the time just before the Reformation. Information about the history of Ilanz can be found in the new history of the city, an episode from the 17th century, told excitingly in the historical novel «Anna Catrina – Tochter von Ilanz».

At St. Margarethenkirche, a significant historical moment in the Reformation took place around 1526. The Chur reformer Johannes Comander had been summoned to argue with representatives of the Catholic Church about the new faith. The radical political decisions for the election of the pastors taken in Ilanz in the same year were taken as far as southern Germany. Hence, Ilanz was awarded the name of Reformation City of Europe in 2015 which gets celebrated with various events.

Ilanz is also vital for the surrounding communities and valleys since the small town is the cultural and economic centre of the Surselva region. Here, you can live in a small and lively town in the middle of the fantastic mountain world of the Grisons Oberland.

Ilanz offers a wide range of leisure options, education, sports, adventure and recreation facilities and has a good infrastructure. Various shopping centres, the transport hub of the Rhaetian Railway and Postauto Graubünden, as well as the health, economic and educational centre of Surselva, are located in Ilanz.
